Working Relationship

Subcontractor Terms Overview

All designers work with Desert Sage Drafting as independent 1099 subcontractors. The full terms are presented during the application process, but here are the key points.

Independent Contractor Status

You are an independent contractor, not an employee of Desert Sage Drafting. You determine your own schedule, methods, and tools. No benefits, workers' compensation, or unemployment coverage is provided.

Tax Responsibilities

You will receive a 1099-NEC for any payments totaling $600 or more in a calendar year. You are solely responsible for:

  • Federal income tax
  • Self-employment tax (Social Security & Medicare — currently 15.3%)
  • Any applicable state income tax in your state of residence

Desert Sage Drafting will not withhold any taxes on your behalf. We recommend setting aside 25–30% of each payment for taxes and consulting a tax professional.

Compensation

Subcontractors are paid on a revenue-share basis. Your percentage is agreed upon in writing before work begins on each project. Payment is issued after project completion and client payment is received.

Work Product & Confidentiality

All drawings and files you create for Desert Sage clients become the property of Desert Sage Drafting upon payment. Client information and project details are confidential and may not be shared with third parties.

Professional Standards

You agree to deliver permit-ready quality work, communicate proactively, and meet agreed deadlines. Desert Sage may request revisions before releasing final payment.

At-Will Engagement

Either party may end the working relationship at any time. Any project already in progress will be completed or properly handed off before termination.
